Donaldson to leave Leeds Rhinos for new career

Leeds Rhinos forward James Donaldson will leave the club at the end of the season to pursue a career as a quantity surveyor.

Donaldson joined the Rhinos in 2019, having been without a club after leaving Hull KR at the end of the previous season. He began his career with Bradford Bulls.

The 32-year-old Cumbrian, who recently returned to action after several months out with a neck injury, has made 112 appearances for Leeds, including their Challenge Cup in triumph in 2020 and the 2022 Grand Final.

“This has been a tough decision but Leeds will always be my club and I will forever be grateful for the opportunities I have had as a Rhinos player," he said.

"Since I've come to the club, it's changed my life in so many ways, whether it's on or off the field.

"We have got a big end to the season ahead and I will be doing everything I can to make sure we finish the season in the best possible manner.

"I will always be available to support the boys but this is an opportunity to start the next chapter."

Donaldson, who was given a testimonial match in February, has been studying for a degree in quantity surveying at Leeds Beckett University alongside his playing commitments.

"He is a model professional and a great example for our younger players about what it takes to succeed at the highest level," said Rhinos sporting director Ian Blease.

"He will leave the club with our very best wishes and will always be welcome back.”
