Wakefield Trinity claimed a second successive Super League away win since their return to the top flight with a dominant victory at Warrington Wolves.

In a breathless affair, Trinity racked up five tries through Jack Croft, Liam Hood, Matty Russell, Matty Storton and Caleb Hamlin-Uele.

Tries from Arron Lindop, Alfie Johnson and Josh Thewlis were not enough for the hosts who struggled to adjust to life back at home following their defeat in Las Vegas by Wigan Warriors last Saturday.

Wakefield leapfrog Warrington into seventh in the Super League standings as the Wire fall to eighth.

Having made five changes from the side that lost in Nevada, Warrington burst out of the traps in the third minute as George Williams' cushioned kick was caught by Lindop, who climbed higher than Russell to take and open the scoring.

Wakefield hit back and Mason Lino thought he had put his side level but, after it was deemed the Samoan scrum-half had not grounded the ball in his attempt to score, video referee Tom Grant adjudged there was insufficient evidence to overturn the on-field decision.

Four minutes later, however, the visitors were not to be denied when Max Jowitt's delicate grubber kick found Croft who dotted down comfortably to put Trinity on the board.

After Jowitt's conversion put Wakefield in front, Williams' bullet pass found Super League debutant Johnson, who raced down the left to dive over in the corner to restore the hosts' lead.

In a yo-yo first-half, a mistake from the restart by Wolves allowed Wakefield to reply instantly and, thanks to some shambolic Warrington defending, Hood found an enormous gap to dive over and help put the visitors back in front by two.

Wire almost regained the lead for a third time when Johnson brought down another accurate kick from Williams but he was held up by good scrambling defending from the visitors before knocking on.

The second-half proved to be just as enthralling and when Renouf Atoni was able to offload, Oliver Pratt raced clear to find Jowitt, who in turn found Russell to dive over for a superb team try against his former club - although replays suggested Jowitt's final pass was forward.

That moment seemed to derail the hosts and, after Wakefield had another try disallowed for a tackle in the air, Storton ran through a non-existent Wolves defence to dive over and increase the visitors' lead to 14 points.

Samoan prop Hamlin-Uele then added his name to the scoresheet when he gathered a short ball to dive over from short range past the despairing challenge of Adam Holroyd.

Thewlis, who also added two goals with the boot, then got his customary try against the Yorkshire outfit when he collected Stefan Ratchford's kick to dot down expertly.

But it proved mere consolation as the Wolves were unable to bounce back with a victory following their exploits in Sin City.

Post-match reaction

Warrington Wolves coach Sam Burgess:

"It was a tough loss, not a great game at all. There is probably not a lot more to say.

"The scoreline suggests we were in the game at half-time but a lot of actions didn't show me we were in it.

"I'm seeing a side that is a bit low on confidence. We got beat in every facet, which is not like us - physically they were stronger than us.

"We lost a kick-off, which is like under-10s stuff, and then we conceded a try that was like an under-10s try."

Wakefield Trinity coach Daryl Powell told BBC Radio Leeds:

"I thought we were really good. We got into attacking positions which we didn't quite execute in the first-half but second-half, we were a lot more composed.

"Defensively, in general, we were pretty solid and overall, I thought we deserved to win."

On winning against his ex-club Warrington:

"Obviously this was a pretty important game for me. I just said to the boys thanks actually and they all laughed.

"This is the only place where it didn't work for me. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to win this one - I want to win every game, but this one was pretty special."
