Amesbury has been unlucky with injuries at Newcastle

Sale Sharks have signed winger Charlie Amesbury from Premiership rivals Newcastle Falcons.

The 24-year-old ex-Harlequins and Exeter player moves to Edgeley Park on a two-year contract.

Amesbury, who has scored seven tries in 43 appearances over two seasons at Newcastle, is also a former England Sevens international.

He has missed several months of this term with an eye injury sustained against Gloucester in November.

"Charlie is young, hungry and what we are all about," Sale executive director of sport Steve Diamond said.

"He is a good signing for us whose chances at Newcastle have been limited of late due to an injury, but he is back to full fitness.

"He did really well at Harlequins and when I knew he was looking to move on from Newcastle, I met up with him and discovered he was very keen to play with the likes of Mark Cueto and I'm delighted to have signed him.

"Charlie is quick and he's got good hands. There has been lots of conjuncture about at the moment as to the way Sale play but with all due respect to myself, Pete Anglesea and Stevie Scott who are forwards, we will be bringing a backs coach to help."

Amesbury becomes the ninth signing Sale have made since Diamond returned to the club in January as he looks to create a squad of his own making for next term.

"I have enjoyed my time at Newcastle over the past two years but the time is right for me to take up this new challenge at Sale Sharks who are clearly showing a huge amount of ambition," the Sharks' latest signing said.
