Johnson is leaving Ospreys to join the Scotland coaching team
Scott Johnson aims to "create something new and brighter" when he joins up with Scotland in time for June's tour to Australia, Fiji and Samoa.
The 49-year-old Australian will become head coach Andy Robinson's senior assistant coach.
Former US Eagles coach Johnson will also be involved in the process of indentifying Scottish qualified talent.
He is to stand down from his coaching director's role with Welsh club Ospreys, external at the end of this season.
"I'm excited by this challenge," said Johnson.
"Scotland is a country with a great history in rugby and with Andy there's a real focus point to get it back to where it belongs on the world stage by creating something new and brighter."
On 1 December, Robinson told BBC Scotland that he was looking for a coach to "bring in some extra international experience", external.
On the announcement of Johnson's appointment, Robinson said: "I am delighted Scott has agreed to join the Scotland coaching team.
"I have huge respect for him as a coach and a person having coached against him on numerous occasions."
Johnson joined Ospreys in the summer of 2009, having coached with the Australian, Welsh and US national sides.
Scottish Rugby's chief executive Mark Dodson said: "I believe this is a significant appointment for Scottish Rugby.
"In addition to working with Andy and the national management team, we are finalising an important wider role for Scott in helping us to better identify Scottish qualified talent around the world."
