Centre Jonny May has signed a two-year contract extension with Gloucester to keep him at the club until 2015.

The 22-year-old came through the Premiership club's academy and has made 53 appearances for the first team.

"We want to sign up a core group of players that will take us forward in the next few years, and I see Jonny as central to that," director of rugby Nigel Davies told BBC Gloucestershire.

"He's one of a crop of very exciting young players."

May has not featured for Gloucester since September because of knee and ankle problems.

But Davies revealed the club had to move quickly to secure the services of the England Saxons player: "We were under intense pressure from a lot of clubs for Jonny's services.

"There were a number of verbal offers, which would have been firmed up in January.

"But the good thing is he's decided to stay, so it's a credit to him and the club."
