Fijian scrum-half Niko Matawalu has signed a new two-year deal with Glasgow Warriors.

The 24-year-old's contract was due to run out at the end of the season, but he has now committed himself to staying at Scotstoun till 2015.

Matawalu joined Warriors last summer and has scored nine tries in an impressive first season for the club.

"We're a very close squad and I'm really enjoying my rugby just now," he said.

Glasgow head coach Gregor Townsend believes the news will give his side a boost as they prepare for their Pro12 semi-final at Leinster on 11 May.

"This will give everyone at the club a massive boost ahead of our semi-final this weekend," he said.

"Niko is a very popular player and he's worked extremely hard since joining the club in the summer.

"He's become a real fans' favourite with his style of play and we're all delighted he's staying in Glasgow."
