Six Nations 2014: Scotland captain Kelly Brown 'upset' at omission

Recalled Scotland captain Kelly Brown says he was "disappointed and upset" at being dropped.

Brown, who will lead the Scots against France at Murrayfield on Saturday, said he was focusing on the future.

The 31-year-old was omitted by head coach Scott Johnson after the opening Six Nations defeat by Ireland.

"I felt the same as any player being dropped," said Brown. "I was naturally disappointed but there's no point feeling sorry for yourself."

Brown missed the home defeat by England and the victory over Italy in Rome.

"I went away and worked on parts of my game and I feel I've improved as a player," he said.

Explaining his team selection, Johnson said he believed Brown would do well against the French.

"I think Saturday is a game that will really suit Kelly," said Johnson.

"Unlike other sides in the competition, France play above the ground a bit and there will be a lot of mauling. I've picked a side that can win the game."

Asked if he considered retiring from national duty, Brown said: "No, it's as simple as that. Playing for Scotland is something I used to dream of as a child and it's a very, very special honour.

"I know that in professional sport, the road is not always smooth and so I just saw it as one more challenge that I was looking forward to overcoming."

Brown revealed he watched the victory over Italy at home and stressed he was "thrilled" for the team.

"The boys were under a lot of pressure that week but I thought the way they played over there to secure the first win in Rome for quite a number of years was very impressive to watch," he added.

Sean Lamont believes Brown's omission and subsequent recall shows no Scotland player is indispensable.

"Kelly's a great player and it's obviously down to the coaching staff if they think he's right for this game," he told BBC Scotland.

"But it's the same for everybody. The good thing about where we are now is that we're now getting a big enough squad to have competition for places.

"Whether you're captain or not, if you're not performing at 100% then you'll be moved about."
