Mat Gilbert: Worcester sign loose forward after his release by Bath

Worcester Warriors have signed loose forward Mat Gilbert following his release by Premiership club Bath.

The 29-year-old Kent-born player moved to The Rec in November 2012 after spells in South Wales with Scarlets and Mogliano in Italy, since when he has scored three tries in 19 appearances.

Gilbert is the only deaf professional sportsman in England, having played 11 times for the England Deaf rugby team.

He has signed up with Worcester after several weeks on trial at Sixways.

Gilbert has made three appearances for the Cavaliers, Worcester's midweek second string outfit, scoring two tries in their 100% winning start to the season.

Warriors director of rugby Dean Ryan said: "We are always willing to give opportunities to people here and Mat has excelled for the Cavaliers over the past month.

Gilbert added: "I am really grateful for the opportunity that I was given by Dean Ryan when I left Bath.

"I've immensely enjoyed playing for the Cavaliers in recent weeks and I'm now looking forward to being part of this club's future. It is a very exciting time for everyone involved with the club."

Worcester, relegated from the Premiership in April, currently stand second behind leaders Bristol in the Championship after winning three of their first four matches.
