James Hook earns Wales call up after Dan Biggar injury

Wales have called Gloucester fly-half James Hook into their squad for the November Tests following an injury to Dan Biggar.

Ospreys' Biggar suffered a groin injury during the 33-28 defeat by Australia.

Hook, with 76 caps, was initially omitted from coach Warren Gatland's plans for games against the Wallabies, Fiji and New Zealand.

Cardiff Blues' Rhys Patchell was ruled out of immediate contention by a hamstring problem.

Wales may also be without Toulon full-back Leigh Halfpenny, who will be assessed for concussion.

And Hook is among a group of England-based players who are not free to face South Africa on 29 November as Premiership clubs do not allow players to appear for Wales in games that fall outside the International Rugby Board's autumn Tests window.

Ospreys scrum-half Rhys Webb's fitness is also being monitored, but is not thought to be too serious.

New Zealand-born Cardiff recruit Gareth Anscombe arrived in Wales on Sunday, 9 November.

But after defeat by the Wallabies, Gatland said the Welsh-qualified player will not be considered for the remaining November Tests.

Scarlets' Rhys Priestland came off the bench in the 47th minute to replace Biggar against Australia.

Halfpenny's withdrawal against the Wallabies forced a reshuffle that saw Liam Williams move to full-back from wing.

At the same time George North went from midfield to his more accustomed role out wide and Cory Allen come into the midfield.

Wales could have Allen's more experienced national rivals Jonathan Davies and Scott Williams back in contention to face Fiji.

Davies was ruled out of the Wallabies clash - which saw Wales slip to their 10th consecutive defeat against the tourists - by a shoulder injury and Williams by a hamstring strain.

Gatland said Halfpenny was unlikely to feature against Fiji irrespective of his fitness.
