James Thomas captained Wales Under 20s, but his career has been hampered by two serious knee injuries.

Newport Gwent Dragons back-row forward James Thomas has extended his contract with the region.

The 24-year-old has made 13 appearances for the Dragons this season after recovering from two serious injuries.

Thomas will go into the Boxing Day derby against Blues at Cardiff Arms Park with a fresh one-year contract.

"It's fantastic to have a full-time professional contract with the Dragons, meaning that I can now focus on my rugby 100%," he said.

Director of Rugby Lyn Jones said: "It's great to have a Gwent-born rugby player who succeeds when given chances.

"He has impressed following a difficult start and has since been selected on merit.

"I look forward to watching him improve over the coming months in becoming a very good regional rugby player."
