Back Richard Smith has signed a new two-year contract with Cardiff Blues.
The 27-year-old, who has scored three tries in 10 games this season, is in his second season with the region after switching from the Wales sevens squad.
"I spent a lot of time on the world series coached by Johnsy [Blues coach Paul John]," said Smith.
"That was a great experience for me and really exposed me to the professional environment... it's something that teaches you to be mentally tough."
Smith, who did not feature in any of the regional academies, also spent a season in Australia playing club rugby in Brisbane after starting his career at Neath.
"It was the equivalent of Welsh Premiership rugby in Brisbane. That was another valuable experience - I went there on my own at 20, 21 years old and it taught me responsibility and how to look after myself," added Smith , who his delighted to have won a new contract after making his Blues debut in January 2013.
"It's massive, from the time I signed my last one I was always looking forward trying to work hard and stay involved with the region.
"We've had a bit of transition over the last few years but things are going to change and we're going to keep moving forward. I'm very proud to be part of that."
