Six Nations 2015: Roberts raring to go after 'strange' Paris period

Jamie Roberts hopes to make his mark on Wales' Six Nations campaign after a "strange" period at Racing Metro.

The British and Irish Lion was among Wales' star performers during their November Tests, but has played only three times since for the Paris club.

Racing's 32-8 win over Northampton in Europe last weekend was one of them.

Roberts, 28, was man-of-the match and said: "I had quite a good November series and... only played three times so it's been a bit of a strange one."

Ahead of Wales' autumn games against Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and South Africa Roberts was among Racing's Welsh contingent who were linked with moves back to Wales.

Roberts later said he had been "hurt" by remarks attributed to his coach Laurent Labit in October, 2014 that led to speculation over his future and those of flanker Dan Lydiate and scrum-half Mike Phillips.

Lydiate subsequently moved to Ospreys, but Phillips and Roberts are still with the French club.

Former Cardiff Blue Roberts was among the try-scorers as Racing beat George North's Saints at Franklin's Gardens.

North and Roberts are now looking forward to the prospect of facing England at Millennium Stadium on Friday, 6 February in the Six Nations opener.

Roberts hopes to have put his "best foot forward" during that rare Racing appearance as Wales coach Warren Gatland ponders his starting XV.

And the qualified medic would like a repeat of England's last visit to Cardiff that ended with Wales beating the 2013 Grand Slam chasers 30-3 to hold on to the Six Nations crown that year.

"Two years ago was a very special day in Cardiff and hopefully we can replicate that," said Roberts.

Meanwhile Toulon's Leigh Halfpenny says he would prefer to play full-back, but would "play in the front row to pull that jersey on".

Scarlets' Liam Williams is challenging Halfpenny for the starting spot amid outstanding form for club and country this season.

Scrum V pundits Jonathan Davies and Martyn Williams have said they believe Williams must start against England, leaving Halfpenny to challenge North and Cardiff Blues' Alex Cuthbert for a wing spot.

Ex-Blue Halfpenny made 23 of his first 24 Wales appearances on the wing before switching to full-back at the 2011 World Cup.

"All my junior level was at full-back and that's where I personally prefer to play," said Halfpenny, who has made 55 Wales appearances.

"I love playing at full-back, but... I'll play anywhere to put that jersey on."
