Exeter scrum-half Will Chudley scored the only try of the game at Sandy Park

Exeter Chiefs secured a first Premiership victory over Bath to move up to third in the table, and pushed their opponents down to fourth.

The Chiefs dominated the first half but went in 6-3 behind at half-time, Tom Homer landing two penalties either side of Henry Slade's effort.

Slade levelled the score shortly after the break and then kicked his side three points ahead.

And Will Chudley finally made it over the line to cap off the historic win.

It means Bath have now lost four in a row in all competitions for the first time since April 2012 and only remain in the play-off places on bonus points, ahead of Leicester Tigers in fifth.

But Exeter strengthened their position in the top four and have now ended their five-year wait to beat every single team in the Premiership.

Three penalties and a conversion from England Saxons fly-half Henry Slade helped Exeter to victory

In the swirling wind at Sandy Park, full-back Homer kicked Bath ahead early on after Exeter were penalised at the scrum.

The visitors lost scrum-half Micky Young to the sin-bin, after he was adjudged to have tackled off the ball, and Exeter drew level from the reliable boot of Slade.

But Homer was successful from the tee for a second time and, despite a huge amount of pressure from the attacking Chiefs, the Bath defence held strong.

The second half continued in a similar vein, Exeter huffing and puffing but unable to scramble over the whitewash.

With the wind behind him, Slade landed two more penalties to give his side a narrow advantage and the pressure on the Bath defence finally told.

A procession of short passes eventually led to Chudley crashing over the line directly under the posts in the 73rd minute, and Slade finished off with a conversion.

Exeter head coach Rob Baxter: "It wasn't a great match - that is the truth.

"Both sides were a bit nervy and edgy because it was an important game for both teams, but I think after half-time we just freed up ourselves enough to have more confidence and that saw us home.

"Fair play to Bath, we know that they have some quality players missing, that was a tough game for us both mentally and physically.

"I am glad that we have come through it now and hopefully we can put in some better performance, especially here, against Bath."

Bath head coach Mike Ford: "I was proud of our effort. I thought we defended really well - heroically. Ball in hand we weren't too bad but a couple of loose kicks cost us 10 points.

"But it was probably the best that we have played for a couple of weeks.

"I though that we dominated the collisions, our defence was good, we were on top at the set piece but it just small margins that cost us.

"We need to recover physically for Friday night and win at home to Sale."
