London Irish: Premiership side could play game in New York

Playing in America would be a major new departure for Irish and the Premiership

Premiership side London Irish are "very close" to holding a match in New York next season, BBC Sport understands.

The match, thought likely to take place close to St Patrick's Day next year, would be the first ever Premiership game to be staged outside England.

Negotiations between Premiership Rugby, who are looking to enter the US market, and USA Rugby are at an advanced stage.

Under the deal, the arrangement to play one game per season could last for three years.

London Irish are keen to hold the match close to St Patrick's Day on 17 March to court the Irish-American community in New York and New Jersey.

USA Rugby is also hoping to form a professional league and it is thought that holding a Premiership fixture could catch the attention of US broadcasters, The Telegraph reports.
