Alun Wyn Jones admitted Wales players were in a "difficult place" when fly-half Dan Biggar stepped up to take his match-winning penalty against England.

Biggar fired over from 50 metres to secure a 28-25 win for Wales in Pool A of the World Cup.

It was his eighth successful kick, but by far his longest of the game.

"That was a difficult place to be because you realised he hadn't shown his range, he hadn't had a pop from that distance yet," said Jones.

Biggar is a regular place-kicker with Ospreys, but does not normally carry out the duties with Wales because of the presence of Leigh Halfpenny.

More from rugby:

But with Toulon full-back Halfpenny sidelined by injury until 2016, the 24-year-old found himself doing all the kicking from the tee.

And his perfect eight-out-of-eight display in a man-of-the-match performance helped out Wales extend their lead at the top of Pool A and strengthen their chances to qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Second-row Jones is Biggar's captain at Ospreys, and was full of praise for the way he took over Halfpenny's kicking mantle.

"Biggs stepped up to the plate," said Jones, who has captained Wales twice.

"No disrespect to Leigh [Halfpenny] because Leigh has a good percentage on those kicks.

"But for Dan to come in and do what he's done, to step up to the plate, is impressive.

"And I'm sure the pressure will be on now in our remaining game to have similar kicks."

After the win over England, Wales face Fiji in Cardiff on Thursday, 31 September before finishing their pool matches against Australia on 10 October.
