Scotland say Finn Russell is making "good progress" from an ankle sprain as they look to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

The fly-half missed Saturday's 34-16 defeat to South Africa, which leaves the Scots needing to beat Samoa next weekend to guarantee a last-eight slot.

Hooker Ross Ford and centre Matt Scott must complete return-to-play protocols after suffering concussions.

Lock Jonny Gray and centre Richie Vernon will be monitored after knocks.

Gray suffered a dead leg in a bruising encounter with the Springboks, while Vernon has a mild knee strain.

Stuart Hogg was forced off in the 63rd minute with cramp but there are no immediate concerns about the full-back.

South Africa replaced Scotland at the top of Pool B after their triumph in Newcastle and look sure to stay there, with their remaining section match against winless USA.

Samoa were soundly beaten by the Springboks and lost to Japan, meaning they have no chance of progress.

However, former international prop Peter Wright remains wary of the Pacific Islanders.

"They will have nothing to lose and it will be another very physical game," he told BBC Scotland.

"The Samoans have been verging on the dirty with some of their tactics and Scotland can't let that intimidate them.

"They will have to show a lot of composure, especially in the early stages of the game, because this is a great chance to reach the quarter-finals."
