James Davies is "in the mix" for Wales' tour of New Zealand, according to Scarlets coach Wayne Pivac.

Flanker Davies, 25, impressed despite the Welsh regions' 31-15 Pro12 defeat by Munster in Limerick.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland names his squad for June's tour on Tuesday with Ospreys open-side Justin Tipuric ruled out and captain Sam Warburton recovering from a shoulder injury.

"I think James is in the mix, he's got to be very, very close," said Pivac.

"I think James in the past couple of weeks has got back on track.

"He had a patch a couple of weeks back when he didn't have his best games but he's come back and done well."

Davies has also been linked with selection for the GB sevens team to compete at the Rio Olympics.

Warburton is expected to recover in time for the tour, and his Blues team-mate Ellis Jenkins, 23, is also a candidate to fill the vacancy left by Tipuric's absence.

Whoever goes, New Zealander Pivac believes Wales face a real challenge.

In addition to three Test matches, Wales face Waikato Chiefs in a mid-week match with all the games taking place in a 14 day period.

"It's going to to be a tough tour after a long season and the World Cup," added Pivac.
