Rory Hughes scored tries in both halves in Glasgow

Glasgow Warriors moved top of the Pro12 with a bonus-point victory over Benetton Treviso at Scotstoun.

Tries from Jonny Gray, Mark Bennett, Rory Hughes and Alex Dunbar - sandwiched by a penalty try for the visitors - secured the hosts the bonus point by half-time.

Left wing Hughes grabbed his second score after the break.

But the only remaining try went to Treviso substitute Davide Giazzon as the second period petered out.

Hogg's blushes spared

Stuart Hogg had the Scotstoun crowd on their feet within two minutes, gathering his own chip ahead and racing clear to the try-line. But the Scotland full-back was left looking sheepish after losing the ball forward in the act of diving for the line.

Warriors did not let up in the opening exchanges and Gray smashed his way over for the game's opening try.

If there was nothing flash about Gray's touchdown, the same could not be said of the next score, Tommy Seymour's searing break finished off clinically by Bennett.

The momentum was checked by the double-whammy of a Treviso penalty try and Dunbar being sent to the sin-bin for a cynical foul, but the reprieve was temporary.

Order was quickly restored when Hughes and Dunbar went over to sew up the bonus point and send the home side in at the break 26-7 to the good.

A five-try bonus point win is never to be dismissed as unsatisfactory, but Glasgow will feel they left plenty more scores behind in this one.

A raft of substitutions led to a drop in Warriors' intensity.

The quality of handling and decision-making dipped markedly and the game's only remaining try went to the Italian side. Substitute Giazzon finished off a rolling line-out maul while Glasgow were down to 14 men.

The man in the sin-bin was Langilangi Haupeakui and the American forward's evening got worse moments from the end when he was shown a second yellow for another dangerous tackle and was sent off.

Not the debut the new signing was hoping for, but Glasgow, while never hitting top gear, got the job done.

Hughes makes his mark

Glasgow's back-line is undoubtedly of international standard. In fact, six of the seven backs are included in Scotland's squad for the autumn Tests and all will be pushing to start those matches.

The odd man out in terms of international selection in the back division is Rory Hughes - though he is one of four players who have been invited to train with the Scotland squad - but he was the man who caught the eye here. His powerful running was too much for the visitors to handle.

The wing picked a beautiful line from a set move from a scrum to go over with barely a finger laid on him for his first try, while he finished off some fine play from Finn Russell and Hogg to grab his second.

There may be more celebrated operators alongside him in the Glasgow back-line, but Hughes showed that he offers a threat with the ball in hand.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend: "The win and getting the bonus point is what we set out to do.

"For the first 20 minutes, we did really well. We played at a real high tempo in that first half-hour.

"Minutes 50-80, we didn't get the same flow in our attack as we did in the first half.

"Treviso competed harder around the breakdown, made it tougher for us, but we weren't as accurate in the second half."
