Autumn international: Wales 'got out of jail' against Japan - Sam Warburton

Captain Sam Warburton says Wales "got out of jail" with their last gasp win over Japan at the Principality Stadium.

But replacement fly-half Sam Davies' drop goal in the final minute secured an unconvincing 33-30 win in their third game of the autumn series.

"There was quite a few mistakes and Japan fed off it," Warburton told BBC Sport.

"Whenever we built a score we let them straight back into it which was disappointing."

Warburton added: "When you build momentum you want to go again but every time we managed some momentum we took two steps back.

"It was a get out of jail free card."

Wales had led by 11 points in the second half after tries by Dan Lydiate, Jamie Roberts and Warburton but allowed the visitors back into the game.

Warburton said Wales did not underestimate a Japan side which had lost to Argentina in their opening game of the autumn before victory over Georgia last weekend.

"This week we probably had one of our best training weeks and we picked a really strong team because we knew there was a tough challenge coming," Warburton said.

"They pushed us all the way until the end, so credit to Japan I thought they did extremely well today."

Warburton praised match winner Davies, who came on to replace Gareth Anscombe in the second half to win only his second half.

"Fair play to Sam stepping up at the end - it takes a lot of guts to do that especially on your second cap," Warburton added.

"He was under a lot of pressure to slot that."
