Pro14: Leinster 21-13 Edinburgh

Leinster moved into second place in Pro14 Conference B with a hard-fought 21-13 win over Edinburgh at the RDS.

Tries by Jordi Murphy and Joey Carbery helped the hosts to a 14-13 half-time lead, with Jason Tovey contributing a try, two penalties and a conversion.

Jamison Gibson-Park touched down late in the second half to secure victory.

Leinster returned to winning ways after losing to the Cheetahs last week, while Edinburgh will be disappointed to leave with nothing after a spirited display.

Tovey's inclusion for his first start of the season was one of nine changes to an Edinburgh side who had won two and lost two, and the fly-half made an early impact by knocking over two penalties in the first 10 minutes as the visitors were rewarded for a strong start.

Leinster responded in the 12th minute when flanker Jordi Murphy picked up and drove over the line after Sean Cronin had made good ground for the hosts, man-of-the-match Johnny Sexton converting.

Sexton joined fellow British and Irish Lions Tadhg Furlong, Jack McGrath and Sean O'Brien in returning to the Leinster line-up, but it was Edinburgh who nudged in front again just before the half-hour mark thanks to Tovey's breakaway score.

The Edinburgh number 10 was alert to intercept Sexton's intended pass for Cronin and run 70 metres to dot down beside the posts for a fine individual try.

The Irish province thought they may have regained the lead soon after but the referee decided, after consultation with the Television Match Official, that lock Scott Fardy had lost control of the ball under a tackle from Tom Brown and knocked forward as he attempted to ground in the corner.

Leinster's pressure was rewarded just before the interval however when Carbery dived over in the corner, with Sexton converting impressively from the touchline to give his side a narrow one-point interval advantage.

Ten minutes after the resumption, visiting flanker Jamie Ritchie received a yellow card for a late tackle on Luke McGrath, but Leo Cullen's side were unable to capitalise on their opponents' numerical disadvantage for the duration of his 10-minute absence.

Sexton was then replaced by Ross Byrne, leaving the Ireland fly-half still four points short of equalling Felipe Contepomi's all-time points record for Leinster.

With six minutes remaining, a miscued defensive clearance by Blair Kinghorn allowed Max Deegan to pluck the ball out of the air and Gibson-Park pounced from the ruck to touch down, with the assistance of a favourable bounce.

Byrne's conversion put eight points between the sides, thereby denying Edinburgh what would have been a deserved losing bonus point.

Edinburgh are at home to Italian outfit Zebre next weekend, while Leinster face Irish interprovincial rivals Munster.
