Bristol open-side flanker Olly Robinson has rejoined Cardiff Blues with immediate effect after a successful loan spell at the Arms Park.

Robinson, 26, joined as short-term cover in September, but was recalled by Championship side Bristol last week.

Blues had initially planned to bring Robinson back at the end of 2017-18.

"Olly was outstanding while on loan and was the out-and-out seven we needed with the injuries we had," said Blues head coach Danny Wilson.

"He suits the way we play and is superb on both sides of the ball. Not only that, but he is a quality professional.

"With Sam Warburton out for the season, Ellis Jenkins only on his way back and Josh Navidi likely to retain his Wales place, Olly gives us that genuine open-side option throughout the season."

Robinson leaves the English second-tier Championship club with boss Pat Lam's blessing.

"Cardiff Blues contacted us to request bringing Olly back for the remainder of their season, following his signing there for the next two seasons," said Lam.

"After first confirming with him, we endorsed their request and support Olly in his future at the Blues. He told the rest of the squad in a meeting and it was good for the team to get an opportunity to wish him well."

After initially returning to Bristol from his loan spell at the Arms Park, Robinson said: "I absolutely loved the last two months being with Cardiff Blues.

"It was brilliant to be playing so much in a great league and with a great bunch of boys so I'm delighted to be offered the chance to come back.

"To compete and learn from the likes of Sam Warburton and Ellis Jenkins is a really big driver for me and if we are all pushing each other then that's all the better for both us as players and the club."

Robinson is available for Blues' Pro14 Welsh derby date at Dragons on Boxing Day.
