Marland Yarde's last-second try saw Sale beat Wasps to keep their Premiership play-off hopes alive.

In a dramatic finish, Wasps' Danny Cipriani was carried off before the ball was worked to Yarde in the left corner from the resulting scrum.

It completed a fine Sale comeback from 17-0 down, with Rob Webber, Byron McGuigan and Bryn Evans also crossing.

Two first-half Josh Bassett tries and Elliot Daly's second-half score earned Wasps a losing bonus point.

Sale, in fifth, are now only three points behind third-placed Wasps with the competition for a top-four place set to go down to the wire.

Wasps have never won at the AJ Bell Stadium in eight attempts, but their run appeared to be about to end as Bassett stepped off his left foot to finish well after being sent in by Willie le Roux.

Christian Wade regained his feet having not been held in the tackle, drew two defenders and sent England wing Daly up the right wing to go ahead once more.

But Wasps were denied at the death and instead of pressing second-placed Saracens for a home semi-final, slipped closer to the chasing pack for the the top four.

Sale have not reached the play-offs since becoming Premiership champions in 2006 but moved to within a point of Newcastle in fourth.

Their comeback began with Webber diving over from close range before a perfectly weighted chip from fly-half AJ MacGinty found McGuigan on the right wing.

Evans charged down Dan Robson's box kick to score within 30 seconds of the restart but it took until the end of the half for Sale to find the decisive score.

On Friday, Sale and England wing Denny Solomona was banned for four weeks for making a homophobic slur in a Premiership match against Worcester last month.

Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond: "It was a big distraction. It took all my time this week and the squad are 100% behind him.

"We're disappointed with the outcome but we move on. If we keep playing like that, maybe Denny can play in the play-offs.

"When an accusation like that is made, everybody takes it personally. We're a close squad.

"We've had a rough week behind the scenes with what's happened with Denny and WillGriff John pulling out in the warm-up, but we've got a good side and I was delighted with the way we came back."

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young: "We got ourselves into a commanding position, then started to lose our discipline a little bit and gave away three or four penalties, which invited Sale back into the game.

"It's a little bit of our Achilles heel. We did everything really well for the first 25 minutes, controlled the game and created two very good tries.

"In the last 10 minutes we were under the pump a little bit, showed a lot of bottle.

"A couple of things could have gone our way in the last couple of minutes, but we shouldn't have been in that position."
