Toby Flood's late penalty saw Newcastle claim their first win of the season and condemn Worcester to a third straight Premiership defeat.

Sonatane Takulua and Sinoti Sinoti went over to put the Falcons in front before they were reduced to 13 men.

A penalty try saw Warriors pull it back to 14-10 at the break and Duncan Weir's converted try then levelled the scores.

But Flood's three penalties made the difference as Falcons' win left Warriors bottom of the table.

The visitors had stormed to an early lead as Takulua finished off Sami Mavinga's break before Flood's clever pass allowed Sinoti to find a gap and touch down.

Weir's penalty midway through the first half got Warriors on the scoreboard and Falcons finished the first period with 13 men as George McGuigan and Johnny Williams were sin-binned, with the hosts awarded a penalty try for the latter's deliberate knock-on.

After Flood then extended the visitors' lead with his second penalty, Weir latched on to Ryan Mills' clever kick before converting to level matters.

Flood and Chris Pennell exchanged penalties before another three-point kick for Falcons' former England international saw them edge a very end-to-end affair.

Despite defeat, Worcester claimed their third losing bonus point in as many games.

Worcester director of rugby Alan Solomons told BBC Hereford & Worcester:

"Our game management at key moments in the game wasn't good enough.

"Our line-outs struggled today and we weren't accurate enough in our execution. I think we paid the price for that."

Newcastle director of rugby Dean Richards told BBC Radio Newcastle:

"We knew it was going to be difficult, our record down here has not been great over the last five or six years.

"Straight after half-time we challenged the players to go and score and sure enough within a few minutes we took three points.

"That set the tone in terms of we weren't going to be bullied when we were down to 13 men."
