Gloucester have named Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams as their captain for the 2025-26 season.

Williams, who was named Premiership player of the season at the end of the last campaign, replaces back-row Lewis Ludlow, who has held the position for the past five seasons.

The 30-year-old, who has 65 caps for Wales, made 19 appearances for the Cherry and Whites during 2024-25, scoring nine tries, after joining from Cardiff Rugby.

Seb Atkinson and Arthur Clark, who both made their England debuts this summer, have been named vice-captains.

'I'm incredibly proud to be named captain of such a historic rugby club," Williams said., external

"When I first arrived at Gloucester, I quickly learned how much this club means to the city and how passionate the fans are.

"It's been an honour and a privilege to represent them, both home and away, and to have their support behind us.

"We've got an exciting, ambitious group here, and I'm looking forward to leading them on the pitch."

Williams was selected for the British and Irish Lions this summer but was ruled out of the tour by a hamstring injury after scoring a try against Western Force in the first match on Australian soil.

Gloucester director of rugby George Skivington said they felt it was the "right time" to name a new captain and that Williams has fully "embodied" what the club is about.

"Ever since Tomos came in, we viewed him as someone with lots of leadership potential and, over the past season, he's really impressed us with the way he communicates with the lads and the standards he sets," Skivington said.

"His performances on the field and the impact he has on those around him speak for themselves."

Gloucester begin the new Prem season away at Sale Sharks on Thursday, 25 September.
