Cornish Pirates' hopes of a club-record second-placed finish in the Championship are still in their hands after they beat rivals Coventry 22-12 at the Mennaye.

Coventry remain second in the table, but are three points above Pirates having finished their matches - meaning Pirates will go above them should they beat London Scottish in their final game.

"It's never been done before so you always want to create history, you always want to do something better," joint-head coach Gavin Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"The credit goes to the lads. They have grafted week in, week out, numbers down in training, we've had to modify on the hoof.

"We've had maybe one blip against Cambridge at home, but apart from that you've got to say the endeavour's been there every game."

Tries from James Martin and Toby Trinder helped Coventry to a 12-9 lead at half time.

But Harry Hocking and Matt Johnson replied after the break while Bruce Houston added a fourth penalty to the three he scored in the first period.

"There was a lot of hard work that went into that," added Cattle.

"The breakdown was fiercely contested by both sides, there was a lot of turnover, set pieces were contested, but we got that foothold in the game in that second half."
