A poor Scotland A side just about saw off a dogged Chile in an error-strewn encounter at Hive Stadium.
Full-back Arron Reed struck early for the home team when he was put away by a lovely offload out the side door by wing Ross McCann.
If that score raised hopes of a big night for Pete Horne's team then it was misleading. They fell into a pattern of poor discipline and sloppy attacking. They never got going.
A try from Chile full-back Luca Strabucchi after half an hour put the visitors ahead. Captain Stafford McDowall's pass went to ground, Strabucchi hacked downfield, then picked up and fell over. Centre Santiago Videla converted.
McDowall was sin-binned soon after for foul play at the breakdown and an upset looked on the cards.
A penalty early in the second half from Videla put Chile into a 10-5 lead, but substitute Ben Afshar's excellent break created an important score for Tom Dodd just short of the hour mark.
Ross Thompson's conversion made it 12-10 to the hosts before a penalty try seven minutes from the end stretched Scotland's margin.
Chile, though, scored again with the last play, Ben Healy being intercepted and substitute Nicolas Garafulic sprinting away to score under the posts, with Videla making it 19-17 with the conversion.
Chile were desperate for more minutes, but much to Scotland's relief, they had run out of time.
