Cornish Pirates joint-head coach Gavin Cattle says his side's missed chances cost them the chance of victory at Ampthill.
The Pirates were beaten 26-21 in their first Champ away game of the season.
The loss leaves Pirates in 11th place having lost their opening two games of the season.
Dan Hiscocks gave Pirates a perfect start with a second-minute try which was cancelled out by Noah Caluori soon after.
Arthur Relton's score made it 14-7 to Pirates after 14 minutes, but Sebastian Smith's try ensured it was 14-14 at the break.
However, Oscar Wilson and Caluori went over for Ampthill after the break, either side of a Josh King score, to secure a bonus-point win for the hosts.
"One thing we're going to be regretting I think is that the amount of visits we had in the 22 and not converting pressure into points," Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall.
"We had a try disallowed in the first half that the lads were convinced they scored.
"But take that away we've had three or four more clear opportunities to convert and we haven't quite got it over the line."
