World Snooker Championship 2013: Stephen Maguire out

World number five Stephen Maguire suffered a shock 10-9 defeat by Dechawat Poomjaeng in the first round of the World Championship in Sheffield.

Poomjaeng, ranked 70, claimed a famous victory on his Crucible debut, ousting the number six seed.

Maguire, from Scotland, missed a chance in the deciding frame before Poomjaeng made a break of 63.

Ali Carter set up a second-round meeting against Ronnie O'Sullivan with a 10-4 win over Ben Woollaston.

Carter won seven frames in a row to beat qualifier Woollaston and secure a clash with O'Sullivan - a repeat of last year's final.

"It wasn't my best performance but it's all about getting through these tight matches," said Carter.

"Ben played very well in the first session. I was delighted to be 5-4 up after being 3-1 down, and winning the final five frames was the icing on the cake."

Woollaston said: "I should have been in front after the first session and tonight was a bit embarrassing really.

"I didn't play well at all. If I had played like I did in qualifying I would have probably come close to winning or won. I just lost my confidence."

Although Maguire reached the semi-finals in 2012, he has now lost in the first round four times since his debut in 2004.

Poomjaeng - only the third Thai to play in the tournament after James Wattana and Tai Pichit - was immediately embraced by the crowd for his antics, missing the entrance into the arena before walking towards the wrong table.

His exaggerated facial expressions and the applauding of his own safety shot were enjoyed by the crowd, while his excellent tactical game left Maguire frustrated.

Poomjaeng made breaks of 72 and 60 to take a 5-3 lead after the first session, but Maguire won the first three frames of a second session that was suspended because it overran.

The qualifier hit back with runs of 74 and 45 to go 7-6 in front, and Maguire was lucky to level after he smashed into the reds when snookered.

The pair exchanged frames before Poomjaeng compiled a composed 54 to move within one frame of victory.

Maguire levelled once more when the match resumed - after Carter wrapped up victory over Woollaston - but his miss let in Poomjaeng for the match-winning break. He will play Welshman Michael White in the second round.
