World Snooker Championship 2014: Selby beats Carter

Mark Selby beat Ali Carter 13-9 in the second round of the World Championship at the Crucible.

Selby, the 2007 runner-up, led 9-7 going into the final session and won the next three frames before Carter stopped the rot with a break of 57.

Two-time runner-up Carter narrowed the gap to 12-9, before Selby clinched the final frame 82-19.

Ricky Walden led Barry Hawkins 9-7 in their second-round match, which will conclude from 14:30 BST on Saturday.

Though the Selby-Carter match did not match the quality of Thursday's first session, an opening 59 gave Selby the first of three successive frames to begin the day.

A break of 65 got Carter moving again but, when Selby took the next two, he was in danger of pulling out of sight.

But Carter hit breaks of 51 and 73 to keep in touch before Selby took control after the interval.

In the other game, Hawkins and Walden were tied 4-4 going into their final session but Walden, ranked 10th, surged to a 9-5 lead before Hawkins claimed the last two frames.

Elsewhere, Ken Doherty won the final two frames of a truncated session to ensure he trails Alan McManus by only a single frame.

Breaks of 69, 107 and 71 were part of a four-frame run that saw McManus take a 4-1 lead, but Doherty fought back to 4-3 ahead of their resumption at 10:00 on Saturday.
