Ronnie O'Sullivan beats Anthony McGill at UK Championship

O'Sullivan won the UK Championship title in 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2007

Four-time winner Ronnie O'Sullivan moved into the UK Championship semi-finals with a 6-4 win over world number 38 Anthony McGill at the York Barbican.

McGill took the first two frames but O'Sullivan, who made a 147 maximum on Thursday, won six of the next eight.

O'Sullivan, 39 on Friday, will play Stuart Bingham in the last four after the world number nine came from 4-1 down to beat Graeme Dott 6-5.

Judd Trump beat Mark Davis 6-1 and will face Stephen Maguire in the other semi.

McGill, 23, was playing in only his second quarter-final in a ranking tournament after beating four-time world champion John Higgins 6-5 in the last 16 on Wednesday.

And O'Sullivan, who nearly withdrew from the competition he last won in 2007 after breaking his ankle last week, was impressed with his Scottish opponent, tipping him to have a big future in the sport.

"I made some really good clearances, but I couldn't shake him off," O'Sullivan, who made a top break of 125, told BBC Sport.

"I have nothing left after that game and I had to draw on every bit of my experience to win it.

"Anthony is a bit like Mark Selby where he has such a good all-round game. I hope he goes on to play snooker for many years because snooker is lucky to have him."

Scotland's Dott had narrowly defeated 2013 champion Neil Robertson in the last 16, and two breaks of 68 and a further one of 92 helped him into a 4-1 lead against Bingham.

But the Englishman compiled breaks of 108, 64 and 103 to win five of the last six frames.

Trump, the 2011 UK champion, was in fine form, registering six half-century breaks in seven frames as he cruised past Davis.

Scotland's Maguire, who lifted the UK trophy in 2004, was the last man to advance with a 6-4 victory over Hong Kong's Marco Fu.
