Masters 2022: Barry Hawkins shocks Mark Selby and Judd Trump thrashes Kyren Wilson to reach semi-finals

Barry Hawkins recorded a shock 6-1 win over a lacklustre Mark Selby to set up a Masters semi-final with Judd Trump.

World champion Selby struggled throughout having started the evening as the overwhelming favourite to advance.

Hawkins, a beaten finalist in 2016, raced into a 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval.

And he pulled further clear with his second half-century break of the match before sealing his win.

While Selby has not been in vintage form this season - reaching the semi-finals at the World Grand Prix and the last eight at the Champion of Champions - this performance was well below par and what is expected of the top ranked player in the world.

The three-time winner lacked his scoring touch when among the balls, with a modest break of 49, his highest of the match in frame six, and one of several opportunities to score heavily that ended abruptly.

Hawkins pinched that frame, like the second when he got a snooker and cleared up after Selby faltered and more than deserved his handsome victory.

The world number 10 played some solid safety shots and showed wonderful composure to take his chances when they were presented to him.

"Mark was not at the races today and I picked him off really," Hawkins told BBC Sport.

"I am going to have to up my game against Judd because he is a scoring machine but I am delighted to be in the semis."

Trump produced a commanding display as he thrashed Kyren Wilson 6-1 at Alexandra Palace earlier on Friday.

World number two Trump, who won the title in 2019, was always in control and made breaks of 68 and 74 to open up a 2-0 lead.

Wilson replied with a 71 but Trump won the next four frames with breaks of 50, 76 and 67 to seal victory.

While Wilson edged their best-of-five Championship League meeting nine days ago, he was made to pay for a slow start and some loose positional play by an opponent that appears to be nearing his best form.

Trump made a superb 50 clearance to establish a 3-1 lead after Wilson ran out of position on a break of 53.

And immediately after the mid-session interval that scenario played out again, with Trump coming from 45-0 down to produce a clinical clearance of 76, to further extend his lead.

It gave Trump, who missed the Masters last year after testing positive for coronavirus, a comfortable cushion and chance to soak up the electric atmosphere inside the arena as he cruised to victory.

"I made an important clearance to go 3-1 up," said Trump, who shouted "come on baby" in his post-match interview with BBC Sport.

"It is so special playing here. Missing out on being here last year was devastating. So to come back and win a couple of games there is just so much pent up aggression inside me and I am loving every minute out there.

"Crowds like that are inspiring. You want to go out and play your best. The two clearances were crucial because Kyren was starting to play well. I think I played quite decent but there are still a couple more levels in there."
