"Very pleased," said Higgins. "First two frames I knew it would be a tough game for him and it's a great atmosphere, I was nervous as well.

"I got off to a decent start and I just put the pressure on him. He had a few chances but it's difficult out there when things start to go wrong.

"It's a special venue, but I've never really done great here and a great venue to play in. When I play like that I feel like I'm a match for anyone."

While we are only in frame four on table one, it is all over on table two with John Higgins producing a superb performance to gain a crushing 6-0 win over China's He Guoqiang.

That's the second 6-0 in two days after Kyren Wilson beat Stephen Maguire by the same score on Monday.

Higgins has won this event three times and lost in the final twice and he advances to the last 16, where he will play the winner of the ongoing table one match between Judd Trump and Neil Robertson.

We were expecting great things on table one in the match between world number one Judd Trump and three-time UK champion Neil Robertson.

It hasn't been the classic we were hoping for so far, but it has been hard-fought with Robertson holding a 2-1 lead after three frames.

He took the opening two frames, 57-17 and 65-47, before Trump got on the board, winning the third 55-14.

Earlier on there was a delay as an elderly gentleman fell ill in the crowd. Play was suspended on both tables and the fans were briefly asked to leave the arena.

World Snooker Tour officials have confirmed the man was conscious and talking to paramedics.

John Higgins is handing out a snooker lesson to China's He Guoqiang at the moment.

Breaks of 110 and 92 saw the 49-year-old sprint through the opening two frames, with the three-time champion then quickly moving into a 4-0 lead.

It's one of the most one-sided mini sessions you could ever wish to see. After four frames, which Higgins has won all of them, the Scot has scored 402 points, compared to only 29 from the Chinese player.

He Guoqiang has only potted nine balls compared to 113 from his opponent, with a highest break of only 14.

We have just had a brief delay as a fan fell ill on the table two side of the arena.

Play was suspended on both tables, with spectators asked to leave, but the fans have quickly been told they were able to return to their seats.

When play resumes, Higgins is 2-0 ahead against He Guoqiang with Neil Robertson 1-0 in front against Judd Trump.

What a start from John Higgins. He was on course for a 144, but the break comes to a halt at 110. He's in and well placed in frame two as well.

We're still in the first frame on table one, with Robertson 51-19 ahead with one red left on the table.

While Judd Trump versus Neil Robertson is the standout match of the first round on table one, those on the table two side of the arena will still have some great action to enjoy.

John Higgins has won the UK Championship three times - 1998, 2000 and 2010 - and lost in the final twice more - 1996 and 2009.

Only Ronnie O'Sullivan, Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry have reached the final more times than 49-year-old Higgins, who is seeded 14th this year.

In his way today is China's He Guoqiang, down at 60th in the world rankings and at 24 years old, a player half the age of Higgins.

When the draw was made last Thursday, the player all of the top 16 seeds wanted to avoid was Australia's Neil Robertson.

The 2010 world champion has won the UK Championship three times, with two of those successes coming in York - in 2013 and 2015.

Robertson's third UK title came in 2020 at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes in a match played without any spectators because of Covid-19.

That final was still a classic though, with him beating Judd Trump 10-9 to clinch his third UK success. Trump, now the world number one, was the player to be paired with Robertson in the standout match of the first round.

Reigning world champion Kyren Wilson moved into the second round of the UK Championship with a convincing 6-0 victory against former winner Stephen Maguire.

Both players were struggling for form on table one, with Wilson's break of 71 in the fifth frame the first half-century of the match.

He then followed that up by winning the sixth frame, helped by a run of 86, as Maguire, the 2004 champion, suffered a tame exit from the tournament.

Wilson's victory comes after four of the 16 seeded players were eliminated from the tournament on the opening two days, including top seed and 2023 champion Ronnie O'Sullivan and fifth seed Mark Selby.

But Wilson, ranked second in the world, moved into the last 16 with ease to set up a match against either 15th seed Chris Wakelin, who defeated former UK quarter-finalist Matthew Selt 6-4.
