Allen makes maximum break at Crucible

  1. All square between Williams and Vafaeipublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 25 April

    Williams 4-4 Vafaei

Mark Williams chunters away after failing to cut a tricky black into the corner pocket which leaves him needing snookers in the eighth frame.

The Welshman refuses to give up the ghost with just pink and black left in play. However, eventually Williams fouls by accidentally knocking in the black attempting to outfox Hossein Vafaei.

Both players share a knowing chuckle at the end of the frame. It will be all square when they return for the evening session.

1985 world champion on BBC Two

Mark Williams knows whatever happens in the eighth he will not be behind going into the evening session so that was a key frame.

  3. Williams nudges in frontpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 25 April

    Williams 4-3 Vafaei

Mark Williams sees a tough pink rebound out of the pocket but it's purely academic as he nudges himself in front in clinical style, passing 100 points in a frame for the first time in the match, albeit not in one visit. The Welshman has a bit of momentum now.

  4. Williams back levelpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 25 April

    Williams 3-3 Vafaei

Mark Williams puffs his cheeks out as he takes his seat after getting himself back on level terms by taking the sixth frame against Hossein Vafaei.

  5. Allen makes 147 but is one frame away from eliminationpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 25 April

    Allen 4-12 Wakelin

    Michael Emons
BBC Sport at the Crucible Theatre

Northern Ireland's Mark Allen compiled an incredible 147 maximum break but is one frame away from being eliminated from the World Championship by Chris Wakelin following a thrilling session in their last-16 tie.

Allen was trailing 10-2 after losing all four previous frames in the morning session on Friday, went straight to the practice table in the mid-session interval and then produced snooker's moment of perfection in the first frame after the restart.

He became only the 11th player to make a 147 at the Crucible. This was the 15th maximum in the main draw stage of the tournament and the first since Mark Selby's clearance in the 2023 final.

However, world number 20 Wakelin, who beat former world champion Neil Robertson in round one, holds a 12-4 lead and only needs one more frame to move into the quarter-finals when the match resumes at 19:00 BST.

  6. Vafaei pinches it on the pinkpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 25 April

    Williams 2-3 Vafaei

This match might turn into a classic, but it hasn't begun that way.

Vafaei battles his way back in front, sinking the pink after Williams missed following a spot of safety jousting.

  7. Massive moment in the matchpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 25 April

One red left on the table with Mark Allen 17 points ahead but snookered. This is a massive frame. It's either going to be 12-4 or 11-5 to Chris Wakelin going into tonight's final session.

  8. Allen ensures match goes to final sessionpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 25 April

What a mixed day it has been for Mark Allen. He has won £45,000 for making a maximum 147 break, but is in massive danger of being knocked out of the competition by Chris Wakelin.

But Allen has at least ensured the match would not be completed with a session to spare and will go to a third session, which will start at 19:00 BST today.

One frame to go in this session.

  9. One lucky fan wins £25,000published at 12:34 British Summer Time 25 April

    Allen 3-11 Wakelin

    Michael Emons
BBC Sport at the Crucible Theatre

Coming to the Crucible is a great experience any time, but for one lucky fan it has been a sensational moment as they have pocketed £25,000 from Mark Allen's maximum.

One of the event sponsors, Midnite Sports and Casino, have been running an initiative where for each session of this year's World Championship, one person in the crowd is selected at random and if a 147 happens, on either table, they win £25,000.

The lucky winner of that today is Brian Nicholls from Tamworth, a lifelong snooker fan who had never been to the Crucible before and was bought a ticket by his son as a present for his 75th birthday.

Congratulations! What a present. What a day.

  10. Hendry - 147 was 'absolutely phenomenal'published at 12:32 British Summer Time 25 April

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Sport

Take a bow. What a performance. Unbelievable. Incredible from Mark Allen.

He was 10-2 behind and he's not scored a point for three frames, comes out after the interval and he makes a 147.

    Absolutely phenomenal stuff.

The World Snooker Tour are going to need to update this board.

We now have 15 maximums made in the Crucible history, made by 11 players (Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O'Sullivan have made three apiece).

  12. Allen makes Crucible maximumpublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 25 April
    Breaking

BBC Sport at the Crucible Theatre

Northern Ireland's Mark Allen compiled an incredible maximum 147 break during his World Championship last-16 tie against Chris Wakelin.

Allen was trailing 10-2 at the time after losing all four of the frames in the morning session on Friday. He went straight to the practice table in the mid-session interval and then produced snooker's moment of perfection in the first frame after the restart.

He became only the 11th player to make a 147 at the Crucible and the first since Mark Selby's clearance in the 2023 final.

There have now been 15 147s at the Crucible.

  13. Postpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 25 April

  15. Williams steps it uppublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 25 April

    Williams 2-2 Vafaei

    That's much better.

The first 50-plus break of the match pulls Williams back to 2-2. He makes a steely 67 and will feel much better for it as he returns to his dressing room.

  16. Vafaei edges aheadpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 25 April

    Williams 1-2 Vafaei

This match has perhaps yet to hit the heights, but a break of 41 from Vafael carries him over the line in frame three.

He's not looking overly troubled at this stage, while Williams, who has been struggling with his eyesight of late, will hope to snag the next frame to go to the interval on level terms.

  17. Straight to the practice tablepublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 25 April

    Allen 2-10 Wakelin

    Michael Emons
BBC Sport at the Crucible Theatre

"Phenomenal, some of the best pots I've seen."

When snooker legend Stephen Hendry says that, you know it is something special.

That is what Chris Wakelin is producing this morning. Four frames out of four for him and he now leads 10-2, three more to go.

That's seven frames in a row for Wakelin, whose breaks today have been 119, 71 and 75 in the past three frames with Allen not scoring a point in those.

Mark Allen has headed straight to the practice table. This will be one of the best recoveries seen in years at the Crucible if he rescues this match from here.

  18. Vafael settles the nervespublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 25 April

    Williams 1-1 Vafaei

This is much better from Vafaei, who was crushed 13-2 by Ronnie O'Sullivan at this last-16 stage two years ago.

He takes the second frame comfortably enough, with Williams conceding when Vafaei sinks the last red to lead by 39 points.

Dennis Taylor, commentating on BBC Sport, says: "He'll be feeling much better now. A much quicker frame and Hossein has settled down now, you'd have to say."

  19. Can Wakelin claim another superb win?published at 11:09 British Summer Time 25 April

Allen 2-9 Wakelin (first to 13)

    Michael Emons
BBC Sport at the Crucible Theatre

This session is going exactly how Chris Wakelin would have dreamed it going last night.

He has been superb today and his break of 119 in frame 10 has been followed by a break of 71 in frame 11 and the scoreboard shows him 9-2 ahead, only four away from the victory target of 13.

If Mark Allen wants some encouragement, Wakelin, 20th in the world, was 7-2 ahead in round one against Neil Robertson only to then lose five frames on the bounce before squeaking through 10-8.

Allen himself fought back from 3-0 down to defeat Fan Zhengyi earlier this week, but to recover from here would be on another level.

  20. Williams pinches openerpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 25 April

    Williams 1-0 Vafaei

Hossein Vafaei looks nailed on to take the opening frame against Mark Williams, but he butchers a fairly simple yellow.

With his lead at 25 points, leaving all the colours up means there is a chance for Williams to steal ahead.

It takes him a few visits as both try to take the tactical upper hand, but when Vafaei misses a long-range green it lets in the veteran Welshman to mop up.
