    Result: Ding 6-5 Milkins

    BBC Sport at York Barbican

Ding Junhui becomes the next player through to the last 16, edging out Robert Milkins in a late-night thriller at the York Barbican.

It went to a decider and Ding held a 63-1 lead, before Milkins threatened to snatch it with a late break. However, he then missed a tough yellow, punching the table in frustration, and Ding sealed the 6-5 win.

He will now play Shaun Murphy in the next round.

  3. Gilbert through, but no Gilbert-O'Sullivan in last 16published at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

    Ressult: Xiao 4-6 Gilbert

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

David Gilbert has become the third man through to the last 16, defeating 16th seed Xiao Guodong 6-4.

That's both the seeds eliminated from the very top of the draw, with Gilbert next playing Barry Hawkins, who dumped out reigning champion and top seed Ronnie O'Sullivan earlier on today.

  4. Gilbert and Milkins two frames awaypublished at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

Ding 3-4 Milkins, Xiao 3-4 Gilbert

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

Both Robert Milkins and David Gilbert are two frames away from the last 16 as they lead 4-3 in their matches against China's Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong respectively.

It was 2-2 in the mid-session interval on both tables and Ding made a break of 47 to go ahead, only for Milkins to make 42 after a fine opening long red at the start of the sixth frame.

Ding closed the gap to six, but a superb escape from Milkins, which saw him have to go down and then back up the table to perfectly hit a red when it had been blocked off by a pink on the top cushion, proved crucial. It was a superb shot, one the crowd lapped up with Milkins putting his arms out in celebration, milking the applause.

Then followed a wonderful break of 130 to take the Englishman into the lead.

On table two, breaks of 72 and 98 moved Gilbert 4-2 in front, before Xiao's 70 narrowed the gap.

  5. Tight and tensepublished at 20:33 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

Ding 2-2 Milkins, Xiao 2-2 Gilbert

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

There's still no splitting the players at the mid-session interval. It is 2-2 in both the Ding v Milkins match and also the Xiao v Gilbert one. Those thinking of an early finish are not going to get their wish.

Ding will feel he should be ahead as he has made three breaks in the 50s - 51, 52 and 57 but the 57 was not enough as Milkins stole it just about on the black. Xiao has made a break of 66, while Gilbert has efforts of 54 and 53 to his name.

The best break of the evening session so far though was Milkins' effort of 82 in the opening frame of hiss match.

  6. Long night ahead?published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

Ding 1-1 Milkins, Xiao 1-1 Gilbert

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

It's looking like being two hard-fought matches tonight as it's 1-1 on both tables - table one in the match between Ding Junhui and Robert Milkins and table two in the clash of Xiao Guodong and David Gilbert.

The winner of that second one will take on Barry Hawkins, who put out last year's winner Ronnie O'Sullivan, while Shaun Murphy is next up for either Xiao or Gilbert.

  7. More to comepublished at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

What an afternoon of snooker it has always been - and we have two more matches to come this evening.

One Chinese player, in Zhao Xintong, has already been eliminated, with another two, Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong, in action in the second session as they take on Robert Milkins and David Gilbert respectively.

  8. 'Soul searching' Murphy 'over the moon' with winpublished at 18:45 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

    Result: Murphy 6-5 Zhao

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

Some quotes from Shaun Murphy on his 6-5 win over Zhao Xintong.

"Anyone that has watched me for any part of my career will know it's not straightforward - I should've had it dead and buried," said Murphy, who led 3-0 at one stage.

"He is a wonderful, beautiful player to watch so I'm absolutely over the moon to get through. Bar Neil Robertson, he was the one everyone wanted to avoid. To get him in the last 32 was as tough a draw as I could've got.

"I've done a bit of soul searching. I've not won one of the big three for 10 years and I've been searching what it could be - maybe I've just gone a bit nice, a bit soft - being nice gets you nowhere.

"It's a pit, it's gladiatorial, I've maybe gone out there [in the past] with one arm tied behind my back."

  9. Murphy winspublished at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

    Result: Murphy 6-5 Zhao

Shaun Murphy is the second man through to the last 16, edging out China's Zhao Xintong. Murphy led 3-0, lost the next three frames as Zhao pulled it back to 3-3.

It was then 4-4 and 5-5, with Murphy holding his nerve to win the decider and set up a last-16 tie against either Ding Junhui or Robert Milkins.

    Result: O'Sullivan 4-6 Hawkins

    Barry HawkinsImage source, PA Media

Barry Hawkins lost 18-12 to Ronnie O'Sullivan in the 2013 World Championship final and led 9-6 in the 2021 Tour Championship semi-finals, only to lose 10-9 in the last frame.

The 45-year-old Englishman, who had to fight through two rounds of qualifying to get to York, admitted he feared the worst when he was drawn against 48-year-old O'Sullivan.

"I thought 'here we go, I'm going home again'," admitted Hawkins, who will face either China's Xiao Guodong or England's David Gilbert in the last 16.

"So many times I've been on the brink of winning against Ronnie and it has gone to the last frame and I've lost a decider. Maybe I was a bit more aggressive today, I had a bit more confidence and belief.

"Obviously this is a great result but there's no way I will be happy if I beat Ronnie and then lose in the next round. I know I can do it, but some times I've not turned up, played awful and crumbled, but I've now just beaten the best player in the world."

Barry Hawkins called the win over Ronnie O'Sullivan one of the best of his career.

O'Sullivan led 3-1 and 4-2 at the York Barbican before Hawkins played some superb snooker to complete a shock win.

"It has been eight years since I've beaten him so that win has to be right up there for me," said Hawkins, after only his third win in 21 matches with the seven-time world champion.

"It's a massive win. So many times I've played him and he has done well and other times he has been there for the taking and I've crumbled and could not take advantage.

"He looked sharp to me, but I felt strong at the end to get a win. Hopefully this gives me a lot of confidence and I can take that into the next round, but I can't get carried away."

  12. 'I'm just enjoying playing, that's the important thing'published at 17:06 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

No excuses from Ronnie O'Sullivan after his 6-4 loss to Barry Hawkins earlier on.

"Barry played a good match and deserved his win, so I have to give all the credit to him," said O'Sullivan. "He played well, was solid and took his chances.

"I'm just enjoying playing, that's the important thing. I try to not look back on it and on to whatever the next event is."

Eight-time UK champion Ronnie O'Sullivan was knocked out on the opening day of the 2024 event, losing 6-4 against world number 20 Barry Hawkins.

O'Sullivan led 3-1 and 4-2 at the York Barbican before Hawkins, who had only won two of the pair's previous 20 meetings, played some superb snooker to complete a shock win.

Top seed O'Sullivan started well as he recorded century breaks of 128 and 114 and won three of the opening four frames in a packed arena.

Hawkins took the first frame after the mid-session interval, with O'Sullivan then showing his frustration as he hit the table with his fist following a missed red into the middle pocket.

What a win for Barry Hawkins, beating Ronne O'Sullivan for only the third time in what was their 21st meeting.

O'Sullivan made two breaks of more than 100 in the opening four, but Hawkins went on a run of more than 290 unanswered points to fight back from 4-2 down and cause a huge shock on day one, afternoon one.

No-one in the press room saw this one coming. What a way to start the tournament.

Barry Hawkins has only won two of his 20 matches with Ronnie O'Sullivan, but is now one frame away from dumping the reigning champion out.

Hawkins has now scored than 260 points without reply. O'Sullivan on the brink and currently being frozen out. Who saw this coming?

    Fightbacks on both tables.

Shaun Murphy was in complete control at 3-0 ahead, including a black-ball finish in the opener, but China's Zhao Xintong has fought back well with three frames in a row.

Two of those three have also been on the black ball and we're now level at 3-3 in a race to six.

On table one, Ronnie O'Sullivan has been 3-1 and 4-2 ahead, but Barry Hawkins is battling hard. A break of 73 saw him grab the seventh frame, followed by a run of 75 to leave it at 4-4 and in effect a best-of-three match.

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

We're a couple of hours into this year's tournament and two enthralling matches are ongoing.

On table one, Ronnie O'Sullivan has looked like he would sweep away Barry Hawkins, who only scored one point in three of the opening four frames - although he did win the other one.

But a break of 60 from Hawkins in frame five saw him keep O'Sullivan in touch, only for the defending champion to clinch the sixth frame.

Signs of frustration from the top seed when he punched the table after missing a red into the middle, with Hawkins then compiling a break of 73 - his best of the match - to pull it back to one.

O'Sullivan still only needs two more, but he's not having it all his own way.

Progress isn't as quick on table two, but Murphy, who led 3-0 but then lost the next two against China's Zhao Xintong, has a slight lead.

  19. Hawkins pulls one backpublished at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2024

    O'Sullivan 3-2 Hawkins (0-106, Hawkins 60)

Barry Hawkins needed to win that fifth frame and gets the job done, winning it 106-0 thanks to breaks of 46 and 60.
