Chris Wakelin speaking after losing 13-5 to Zhao Xintong: “It just didn’t go to plan yesterday, it was a big occasion and I did feel the nerves to start with. The quarter-finals of the World Championship is a big game for anybody.

“I tried to be too aggressive and my long game was totally gone. Every time I got a chance I was landing awkwardly and I couldn’t make it happen. It all went to pieces yesterday.

"I am used to my season finishing on about the 10th of April so to get to the 30th of April is two weeks less off but it is magic. It has been an incredible season and I have made some memories that will last me a lifetime but hopefully this is building blocks for the next stage of my career.

"I will start next season in the top 16 so there are a lot of positives I will take away from the season."

"A little bit [of nerves]. I have played 22 days with the qualifiers and three more matches so I feel mentally tired. I think it has made me stronger. This tournament has made me stronger. It has been a few months since I played in a tournament and I have played really well until now.

"Hopefully [I can become the first Chinese player to win at the Crucible]. A Chinese player will win in the future.
