Plymouth Devils get first competitive win of the season

Plymouth Devils got their first competitive win of the season with a 48-41 home League Cup success against Somerset Rebels.

Mark Lemon top-scored for Plymouth with 13, while reserve Todd Kurtz got 11+1.

The win added to a promising performance on the previous night, when the Devils took a bonus point from the reverse fixture in Somerset.

The four-point haul from the weekend means the Devils can still make the League Cup semi-finals.

They must win their final two matches away at Ipswich and Rye House to qualify

Plymouth took an early grip on the match at the St Boniface Arena as Kurtz and Ben Reade teamed up for a second heat 5-1.

That gave them a six-point lead and although the match remained tight, title favourites Somerset were unable to overturn the deficit.

The Rebels managed to get the lead down to one point following heat 13, but Kurtz and Ricky Kling secured a 5-1 maximum in the very next race to settle matters.

The Devils picked up an away bonus point from their 48-42 defeat to the Rebels the previous night.

Ty Proctor and Ricky Kling both scored 11 in a meeting the Devils led at half-way.

But the Rebels, who are notoriously strong at home, secured the win in the last heat thanks to a maximum 5-1 from Josh Grajczonek and Alex Davies.
