BBC Sports Personality of the Year takes place in Leeds

The BBC's Sports Personality of the Year stage is set for the 60th time. For 2013, it is the turn of the First Direct Arena in Leeds

After doing what no British man had done for 77 years by winning the men's singles Wimbledon title, Andy Murray was regarded as the clear favourite to get his hands on the prestigious silver-plated four-turret lens camera trophy. Who could forget those iconic summer images?

All good events start with a red carpet reception and this was no different, as the great and the good of British sport gathered at the 12,000-seat venue in Yorkshire

Every great sportsman starts somewhere and the likes of Joe and Maggie Forber, who received the 2013 Unsung Hero award, offer a route into sport for many. They are honoured for their work in promoting basketball in Manchester, where they founded a club in 1997

The British and Irish Lions were devastating in the decisive Test in Australia as they sealed a 2-1 series win with a 41-16 victory in July. Their summer achievement earned them the Team of the Year award for 2013

"Great players make great coaches," said a humble Warren Gatland after being named Coach of the Year. He guided the British and Irish Lions to a first win in Australia for 24 years

Anne Williams, whose son Kevin died in the Hillsborough disaster, is honoured for her pursuit of the truth about events on 15 April 1989. Her death earlier this year meant her family received the award on her behalf and they dedicated it to the 96 fans who lost their lives

In 2013, Amber Hill, 16, became the youngest winner of a senior World Cup in skeet shooting. Her achievements earned her the Young Sports Personality of the Year award. She pipped athlete Dina Asher-Smith and golfer Charley Hull, who were also shortlisted for the prize by an expert panel

BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year Sebastian Vettel won his fourth successive Formula 1 World Championship this year, with four races to spare. "It's a very special award as I like to collect trophies," said the German. "I think I have a special place to put this one. It's been a special year."

Three men who are used to winning share a joke on the stage, but two of them - jockey AP McCoy and rugby player Leigh Halfpenny - have to settle for third and second place respectively on this occasion

McCoy finished third in the audience vote after a year in which he rode his 4,000th winner, becoming the first jockey to achieve that feat

Wales and British and Irish Lions star Halfpenny was voted into second place. “I can’t believe it," he said. "This is a really prestigious award, just to be nominated is brilliant and I feel really privileged."

A one-off for a one-off. In the 60th edition of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, Sir Alex Ferguson receives a Diamond Achievement award. Ferguson retired in May after more than 26 years as manager of Manchester United, with 13 league titles and two European Cups to his name
