Squash World Championships: Nick Matthew into third round

England's defending champion Nick Matthew recovered from losing the opening game to beat Australian Zac Alexander and reach the last 16 of the World Championships in Doha.

The world number two from Sheffield prevailed 8-11 11-5 11-5 11-5.

Matthew, 32, will face either Egyptian Tarek Momen, the 13th seed, or another Australian, Ryan Cuskelly, next.

He is aiming to become the first man since Pakistan's Jansher Khan to win the world title three times in a row.

Khan was unbeaten from 1992 to 1996.

Matthew will meet Egypt's Tarek Momen in the third round after the 13th seed defeated Australia's Ryan Cuskelly 11-6 11-8 11-6.

Guernsey's Chris Simpson also progressed to the third round, upsetting Dutch ninth seed Laurens Jan Anjema 11-4 8-11 11-7 9-11 11-9.

The 25-year-old Simpson, ranked 34 in the world, will now play the French third seed Gregory Gaultier, who beat Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez 11-9 11-7 11-9 in the last 16.

Two other Englishmen bowed out in the second round.

Adrian Grant was beaten 3-0 by in-form fifth seed Ramy Ashour, the Egyptian prevailing 11-2 11-6 11-9.

Joe Lee also lost in straight games, seventh seed Amr Shabana, the four-time former world champion, winning 11-5 11-2 11-4.
