A teenager from the Isle of Wight has been selected to compete at the World Junior Surfing Championships.

Boe Howell, 16, from Yarmouth, is one of three girls to have been selected for the under-16 Surfing England squad.

She will join the best young surfers from across the globe in Brazil next month for the competition.

Boe said: "All of the surfs in horrible waves have been worth it because it's finally amounting to something exciting."

Surfing will once again be part of the Olympic Games next summer after making its debut in Tokyo and the Junior Worlds are a proven pathway for future Olympic stars.

It will be the 19th edition of the championship and the second time the event has been hosted in Rio de Janeiro.

Boe said when she is out in the sea, riding the waves, "I don't have to think about anything else, it's such a good feeling."

"If you finally land a turn or something you've been trying to do, it's like the best thing ever," she said.

Boe has learnt her craft for surfing in the waters at Compton Bay off the Isle of Wight.

Now that Boe has been selected, she makes regular trips with her father Nigel Howell to train in Cornwall and at the Surf Centre in Bristol.

Mr Howell said: "It's really tough conditions here in England, it can be amazing but it's also a very tough place to get to that next level."

He said his daughter had "done incredibly well," and that English surfers were doing "amazingly" considering others from around the world were able to train in places more renowned for their waves.

Boe added: "Obviously there is a lot of pressure but I really like there isn't anything I really have to live up to right now because it's the first time I'm going to the Worlds.

"I'm excited to be surfing with all those really good people."

The world's premier junior surfing competition will be held between 24 November and 3 December.
