British Swimming Championships: Ross Murdoch claims 100m title

Scotland's Ross Murdoch won his duel with England's Adam Peaty to claim victory in the 100m breaststroke final at the British Championships.

Murdoch, 20, finished in a Scottish record time of 59.56 seconds, 0.23 secs ahead of Peaty, with Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson third.

Sophie Taylor, 18, won the 200m breaststroke, setting a new English record of two minutes 24.46 seconds.

Francesca Halsall secured gold in her favoured 50m freestyle event.

Other winners on day three in Tollcross, Glasgow included Roberto Pavoni (200m butterfly), Georgia Davies (100m backstroke) and Tom Hamer (S14 200m freestyle).

The event is doubling up as the final opportunity for English, Scottish and Welsh swimmers to secure their places in this summer's Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Murdoch, who has already qualified for the Scotland team after impressing at the Scottish Championships last week, opted against swimming in the 200m breaststroke to focus on the shorter distance.

"This is the one I really wanted," he told BBC Sport.

"I know what Adam is thinking every day in training because it's what I'm thinking and that's how much we want to win a medal [at the Commonwealths].

"We push each other and that's great for the British team in the future. It's going to be a brilliant battle in Glasgow."

After taking bronze, Jamieson will now focus his training exclusively for the 200m, in which he won his Olympic silver medal.

"It's something I have to do," he told BBC Sport.

"I don't have the pace to be world-class in the 100m, whereas I have the confidence of knowing on my day I can win that gold in the 200m."

Taylor, who won gold in the 50m breaststroke on Friday, secured her place in England's Commonwealth Games team with a four-second personal best in the 200m final.

Her 17-year-old rival Molly Renshaw, who controversially missed out on selection for London 2012, was second.

"I did worry that I had gone out too fast and could see Molly just on my shoulder when we went into the last length," Taylor said.

"I'm so pleased to have held on and I can't quite believe the time."

Davies, 23, who won 50m backstroke bronze at the 2010 Commonwealths in Delhi, proved she could be in the medals again in Glasgow with an impressive 100m backstroke personal best of 59.78.

Defending champion Lauren Quigley was second, with London Olympian Elizabeth Simmonds third.

Halsall celebrated turning 24 with victory in the 50m freestyle, clocking the second quickest time in the world this year of 24.51 seconds to finish ahead of Scotland's Sian Harkin.

The Loughborough-based swimmer then qualified for Sunday's 50m butterfly final with the fastest time of 25.88.

Pavoni, 23, followed up victory in the 400m individual medley on Friday with his first British title in the 200m butterfly after holding off the challenge of defending champion Joseph Roebuck.

Elsewhere, Calum Jarvis set a new Welsh record of 49.54 to qualify fastest for Sunday's 100m freestyle final.
