        China completed a clean sweep of Olympic gold medals in table tennis by winning the women's team title in Paris, the sixth time the Chinese have collected the full set.

        The Chinese women withstood a brave Japanese challenge but eventually overpowered their opponents 3-0 to snatch gold, their fifth from five competitions at the Games.

        The Chinese pairing of Chen Meng and Wang Manyu were tested in the opening doubles by Hina Hayata and Miwa Harimoto, before winning 9-11 11-6 5-11 11-6 12-10.

        Sun Yingsha dominated Miu Hirano in match two, 13-11 11-6 11-6. And Wang completed the victory over Miwa 2-14 12-10 11-7 11-6.

        Wang, Chen and Sun were part of the team that defeated Japan in the Tokyo 2020 women’s team gold medal match, and most recently at the 2024 World Championships.

        China are one step closer to a clean sweep in the Olympic table tennis after winning gold in the men's team event, beating Sweden 3-0.

        Five-time Olympic gold medallist Ma Long and world number one Wang Chuqin won a tight opening doubles, beating Anton Kallberg and Kristian Karlsson 8-11 11-4 11-3 6-11 11-7.

        World number three Fan Zhendong beat Truls Moregard 10-12 11-8 11-9 11-13 11-5 before Wang returned to clinch the gold with a victory over Kristian Karlsson 11-9 11-5 10-12 10-12 11-2.

        Earlier, France's 17-year-old Felix Lebrun helped the hosts to claim the bronze medal. His brother Alexis paired up with Simon Gauzy in the opening doubles match for a win, before Felix put the hosts 2-0 up.

        Shunsuke Togami and Tomokazu Harimoto pulled Japan level, but Felix won the final match to claim a second medal in Paris to go with his bronze from the men's singles.

      • China continue dominance with men's gold

        China continued their dominance of Olympic table tennis with victory in the men's singles - their third gold from three events so far in Paris.

        Second seed Fan Zhendong came from behind to avoid an upset against 19th-ranked Truls Moregard of Sweden.

        Fan won 7-11 11-9 11-9 11-8 11-8, and although Moregard saved five gold medal points in the final set, Fan was finally able to get the win over the line and spark wild celebrations from the overwhelmingly Chinese-supporting crowd.

        Earlier, there was also joy at the table tennis arena for the hosts, as 17-year-old Felix Lebrun has won men's singles bronze for France.

        The teenager defeated Brazilian opponent Hugo Calderano in straight sets, 11-6 12-10 11-7 11-6.

      • Chen retains Olympic women's singles table tennis title

        In a repeat of the gold medal match at Tokyo three years ago, Chen Meng beat fellow Chinese player Sun Yingsha 4-2 to win Olympic gold in the women's table tennis singles in Paris.

        The pair are scheduled to take part in the women's team event for China, starting on Monday.

        Earlier, Hina Hayata, of Japan, won the bronze medal match against Shin Yu-bin of South Korea.

      • Pitchford knocked out of men's singles table tennis

        Liam Pitchford was eliminated from the men's singles table tennis at the Olympics after a second-round defeat by Slovenia's Darko Jorgic in Paris.

        Pitchford, 31, fought back after losing the first two sets to make the score 3-2, but Jorgic pulled clear with a dominant sixth set.

        The Paris Olympics are Pitchford's fourth Games but he has never made it into the last 16, with Jorgic also knocking him out at the same stage at Tokyo 2020.

        The last 16 begins at 14:00 BST on Wednesday.

      • China's Wang and Sun win mixed doubles gold

        China's Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin beat Democratic People's Republic of Korea's Ri Jong-sik and Kim Kum-yong to win table tennis mixed doubles gold. The pair, who are ranked world number one, won 4-2 at South Paris Arena 4.

        Mixed doubles was the only event at Tokyo 2020 in which China failed to win gold.

        In the bronze medal match, South Korea's Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin thrashed Hong Kong's Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem 4-0 to take third.

      • Pitchford comfortably into next round of table tennis

        Great Britain's Liam Pitchford comfortably beat Fiji's Vicky Wu in straight sets (4-0) to cruise into the second round of the table tennis.

        Pitchford, 31, won 11-6, 11-3, 11-3, 11-2 to set up a meeting with Slovenia's Darko Jorgic.

        Jorgic is seeded 13th - 12 places ahead of Pitchford, who now faces a much tougher challenge to progress to the last 16.

        Round-of-32 matches begin on Tuesday.
