London 2012: Paul Drinkhall improves ranking ahead of European qualifying

Britain's Paul Drinkhall has regained his position as the top table tennis player in Britain after moving up to number 106 in the world rankings.

The 22-year-old has been in good form recently, winning his fourth English men's singles title last month.

Drinkhall leads a six-strong GB squad competing in the European Olympic Qualifying tournament from 11-15 April.

The tournament, in Luxembourg, is the penultimate chance for the players to qualify for the Olympics by right.

Six men and four women are currently battling to gain one of three places in each gender to represent Britain at London 2012.

The British Table Tennis Federation have six host nation places available to them but some of the players have stated their aim to qualify without them.

In that case Drinkhall, Andrew Baggaley, Liam Pitchford, Joanna Parker, Kelly Sibley and Na Liu would need to reach the later stages of the competition in Luxembourg.

Failing that, the squad have one more chance to qualify by right in a final World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Qatar from 10-13 May.

Britain's top woman Parker, currently 136th in the world rankings, told BBC Sport: "I'm in a good position [to be selected for the Games] at the moment but there's still time to go. It's not all about being selected, it's also about competing once you get there."

GB Table Tennis are expected to announce their final Olympic squad on 31 May.
