French Open: Novak Djokovic beats Victor Hanescu to make third round

Novak Djokovic collected his 41st consecutive win as Victor Hanescu retired hurt at 6-4 6-1 2-3 adrift in their French Open second-round match.

Djokovic, whose run stretches back to Serbia's Davis Cup final win over France in December, showed no sign of allowing his excellent form to slip.

The second seed will face 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro next.

Third seed Roger Federer made the last 32 with an emphatic 6-3 6-0 6-2 victory against France's Maxime Teixeira.

Djokovic, whose impeccable form in the build-up to Roland Garros earned titles in Belgrade, Madrid and Rome, had little problem negotiating an opponent few seeds would have relished facing.

Ranked 60th, Hanescu was a top-40 player a year ago but rarely looked a threat as Djokovic took seven successive games through the middle of the match to choke off the Romanian's chances.

The trainer was called at the end of the second set and, despite a solid start to the third, Hanescu folded at 3-2 ahead in the third as the pain in his left leg became unmanageable.

"I keep on thinking only about the winning. Really, I'm not thinking about when this streak - this amazing streak - will end. So I guess that's the right mental approach," said Djokovic after his win, before reflecting on his encounter with Del Potro.

"Well, it's a big challenge for both of us," he added.

"He's a fantastic player who always deserved to be in the top five in the world, and I'm sure he's going to come back very quickly there, because he has amazing groundstrokes and a big serve."

Federer, who completed his set of Grand Slam titles in Paris in 2009, was pegged back by Teixeira after an early break but then rarely stretched.

The Swiss rattled off 13 consecutive games as he won through to the third round in just an hour and 24 minutes.

Teixeira is ranked 178 places short of world number three Federer and never looked like closing the chasm in class between them.

Federer always looked as if he had another gear and accelerated away from his 22-year-old opponent after breaking to lead 5-3 in the first.

Frenchman Teixeira won just eight points in the second set, before finally making an impression on the scoreline at 1-4 in the third.

Teixiera gamely salvaged a match point in the seventh game but could not resist a charging Federer much longer and skewed a backhand wide soon to surrender the match.

Federer admitted he felt some sympathy for his opponent.

"It's so difficult to come out and play on a big court when you are not used to it," he said after the match.

"I'm playing here for the 12th year and I'm very experienced."

Teixiera, a wild card who won his first Tour level match by beating Vincent Millot in the previous round, was happy to put the defeat down to experience.

"To play against Roger is an incredible experience. I'll never forget it and it will be great memories," he said.

Janko Tipsarevic, the 29th seed, will face Federer next after enjoying a leisurely victory against Spain's Pere Riba, which he won 6-1 6-3 6-0 on Court Seven.

The Serb will hope to go one better than the 2008 Australian Open, in which he reached the third round, where he took Federer to five sets before eventually losing the final set 10-8.

Del Potro, who missed last year's tournament through a wrist injury after making the semi-finals in 2009, looked close to his powerful best, as he dispatched Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic 6-3 6-2 6-4.

Seventh seed and clay-court specialist, David Ferrer, wrapped up another of the day's straight-sets win in the men's draw as he eliminated France's Julien Benneteau 6-3 6-4 6-2.

Ninth seed Gael Monfils made it a little tougher for himself. He overcame a mid-match loss of concentration to emerge victorious 6-3 1-6 6-1 6-3 from the all-French meeting with Guillaume Rufin on Philippe Chatrier.

Compatriot and 13th seed Richard Gasquet recovered form a set down to beat Spain's Marcel Granollers 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-4.

Gasquet will face Thomaz Bellucci, a semi-finalist at the Madrid Masters, following the 23rd seed Brazilian's 6-1 6-2 6-4 defeat of Andreas Seppi.

Swiss 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka and Russian 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny progressed with straight-sets wins over Thomas Schoorel and Mikhail Kukushkin respectively.
