Watson faces Dubois from Canada in the second round

Britain's Heather Watson and Elena Baltacha have reached the second round of the WTA Citi Open in Maryland, USA.

Guernsey's Watson beat Greece's Eleni Daniilidou, who is ranked one place above the world 103 and British number three, 6-4 6-1 after a rain delay.

The 19-year-old will next face Canada's Stephanie Dubois in the second round.

Meanwhile, British number one Baltacha is also through to the second round after beating Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2 7-6.

"On the whole I felt I played a good solid match," said the Scot, ranked 57th in the world and seeded sixth in Maryland.

"She upped her game in the second set and made me work very hard but I stayed strong and kept fighting. I'm really chuffed to be through to the next round."

Watson is also competing in the doubles and partners fellow Brit Anne Keothavong.

They face Canadian Eugenie Bouchard and Misaki Doi from Japan in the first round.
