Anne Keothavong loses to Alberta Brianti in Maryland

Keothavong was playing for the first time since Wimbledon

British number two Anne Keothavong fell at the first hurdle at the Citi Open with defeat by Italy's Alberta Brianti.

Keothavong, the world number 94, opened her American hard-court season with a 6-3 6-4 loss against the 66th-ranked Brianti in Maryland.

The 27-year-old Briton will team up with compatriot Heather Watson in the doubles later on Tuesday.

Watson made it through to round two of the singles on Monday, and was joined by British number one Elena Baltacha.
