Serena Williams securess Rogers Cup victory

Williams is hitting form in time for the US Open starting at the end of August

Serena Williams made it back-to-back tournament victories with a 6-4 6-2 win over Samantha Stosur in the Rogers Cup final in Toronto on Sunday.

The win comes after the American's success in the Bank of the West Classic two weeks ago and is a boost ahead of the US Open, which begins on 29 August.

Williams is currently ranked 80th in the world after being sidelined for a year by injury and illness.

But her return to form continued as she beat the world number 11 in 77 minutes.

Williams sent down nine aces and won 89% of her first serve points for her 39th career title.

She broke the Australian's serve to go 5-4 up in the first set and went on to break Stosur twice more in the second set before clinching victory with an ace.

Williams was injured shortly after winning the 2010 Wimbledon title, cutting her foot on a piece of glass and requiring two operations.

She spent 20 weeks in a cast and walking boot and in February was diagnosed with blood clots in her lung which kept her out until June.

Sunday's victory means she is set to move up to 31 in the new world rankings.
