French Open: British trio win in first round of qualifying

James Ward is seeded eighth in French Open qualifying

Britain's James Ward, Kyle Edmund and Brydan Klein all progressed through the first round of French Open qualifying with three-set wins.

Ward overcame Irishman James McGee 6-1 1-6 6-0 and will face Sweden's Christian Lindell on Wednesday.

Edmund will meet Victor Hanescu after recovering from a set down to beat Gerald Melzer 3-6 6-2 6-4.

Klein's 3-6 6-2 9-7 success over Mathias Bourgue set up a second-round encounter with Facundo Arguello.

Liam Broady will continue his match with Romanian Radu Albot on Wednesday, with the Briton 5-4 up in the first set.

Players have to come through three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw at Roland Garros, which begins on 24 May.

Women's qualifying begins on Wednesday, with Britain's Johanna Konta and Naomi Broady taking on Jovana Jaksic of Serbia and Turkey's Cagla Buyukakcay.
