Wimbledon 2015: Katie Swan wins opener in girls' singles

Bristol-born Swan reached the second round of Wimbledon qualifying last month

Britain's Katie Swan made it through to the second round of the girls' singles at Wimbledon following a hard-fought win over Seone Mendez.

The 16-year-old, seeded fifth, beat her Australian opponent 6-7 6-2 6-4.

Scotland's Anna Brogan and Maia Lumsden also reached round two after upsetting seeds at SW19.

There were defeats for Emily Arbuthnott and Jodie Anna Burrage, while Charles Broom, Jay Clarke, Jonathan Gray and Ewan Moore lost in the boys' singles.

Swan holds her nerve

Swan, who reached the second round of Wimbledon qualifying last month, had to battle hard in her first round match.

She and Mendez exchanged breaks midway through the first set before heading into a tiebreak in which Swan was 5-1 up at one stage, but then the Australian won six points in a row to take it 7-5 as Swan netted a forehand return.

However, the teenager from Bristol started the second set confidently and had several opportunities to break, eventually doing so in the sixth game of the set with a big forehand to go 4-2 up.

She held serve and then broke again to take the set and send the match into a decider.

Swan, who reached the Australian Open junior final earlier this year, broke in the fourth game of the third set and served for the match at 5-3, but saw three match points go begging as Mendez broke back.

The Australian then saved two more match points on her own serve before mis-hitting a forehand on a third to give Swan victory.

Scots make progress but boys find it tough

Scottish teenagers Brogan and Lumsden also progressed after straight-sets wins over seeded opponents.

Brogan beat Czech top seed Marketa Vondrousova 6-1 6-2, while Lumsden overcame Dalma Galfi, the third seed from Hungary, 7-5 6-3.

However, Hertfordshire's Arbuthnott was overpowered by Olivia Tjandramulia of Australia 6-3 6-2 and Bournemouth's Burrage lost to France's Lucie Wargnier 6-1 7-5.

Burrage, 16, said after the match that she had suffered from nerves and "panicked" midway through the second set, having to call the trainer after hyperventilating.

Derby's Clarke was knocked out of the boys' singles by Taylor Fritz, the top seed, losing 6-3 6-2 while Broom, from St Albans, also exited at the hands of another American, beaten 6-1 6-1 by Ulises Blanch.

Gray lost narrowly to Alberto Lim 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (13-11). The 18-year-old from Leeds saved three match points serving at 5-6 in the second to take the set to a tiebreak.

Gray had five separate opportunities to take the set but failed to take the match into a decider and Lim, from the Philippines, was victorious when Gray sent a service return wide.

Scotland's Moore went out in straight sets, losing to sixth seed Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera 7-6 (7-2) 6-3.
