Katie Swan's run in the girls' singles at Wimbledon came to an end as the Briton was beaten by Viktoria Kuzmova in the quarter-finals.

Swan, the 16-year-old fifth seed, was the highest-ranked player left in the competition but lost to her unseeded opponent 7-6 (7-2) 6-0.

Slovakian Kuzmova, 17, managed to overpower Swan from the baseline.

Swan took a medical timeout at 0-3 in the second for treatment on an injury but was unable to mount a comeback.

Laura Robson, who won the girls' singles trophy at Wimbledon aged 14 in 2008,, external remains the last British player to triumph in the junior tournament at SW19.

Swan, who lives in Wichita in the United States, reached the second round of Wimbledon qualifying last month and had progressed to the last eight of the junior competition on the back of her powerful first serve, which averages just over 100mph.

The teenager double-faulted twice as she was broken in the first game but she managed to break back in the fourth game of the first set, converting her third break-point opportunity as Kuzmova netted a backhand.

Kuzmova, number 152 in the junior world rankings but a regular on the senior ITF tour this year, continued to set up opportunities to break Swan's serve.

However, the Brit managed to take the first set to a tie-break, which the Slovakian dominated as Swan made several errors.

Kuzmova consistently hit powerfully and broke in the second game of the second set with a backhand return down the line.

And after her opponent had served four consecutive aces to go 3-0 up, Swan took treatment for an abdominal problem but looked uncomfortable on her return to the court and was broken twice more.

She served to stay in the match at 0-5 but double-faulted twice and Kuzmova clinched a place in the last four when Swan put a forehand into the net following a rally.

Swan reached the final of the junior Australian Open earlier this year and Heather Watson remains the last British player to win a girls' singles title at a Grand Slam event following her triumph at the US Open in 2009., external
