WTA Finals: Caroline Garcia beats Caroline Wozniacki; Elina Svitolina beats Simona Halep

France's Caroline Garcia produced a stunning fightback against Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki to reach the WTA Finals last four at the expense of world number one Simona Halep.
Garcia recovered from a desperate first set to beat Wozniacki 0-6 6-3 7-5, and then had to wait for the result of the final round-robin match in Singapore.
Elina Svitolina beat top seed Halep 6-3 6-4 to ensure Garcia won the Red Group.
Karolina Pliskova will replace Halep as number one by winning the title.
The semi-final line-up on Saturday sees eighth seed Garcia take on American fifth seed Venus Williams, and sixth seed Wozniacki up against Czech third seed Pliskova.
Garcia continued the superb run of form that saw her grab the last qualifying place for Singapore and, after losing to Halep in her opening match, recover from 3-5 down in the final set of her next two matches.
"It was kind of weird, actually, to be here," said Garcia.
"I qualified last minute, two weeks before. I wanted to keep improving like I did. That's why I think I won these two matches."
Wozniacki, who had already qualified from the Red Group after two wins, had lost just four games in five sets of tennis after taking the opener 6-0 against Garcia.
However, the Dane could not finish the job despite serving for the match and getting within two points of victory.
"I feel like I should have won that match, but it is what it is," said Wozniacki. "I had the chance to serve it out and I didn't. That's really it."
Number one hopes in the balance for Halep
Halep had begun the week with an impressive win over Garcia but failed to build on that early momentum, going down in straight sets to Wozniacki and, on Friday, Svitolina.
The Romanian quickly fell 3-0 down as Svitolina, knowing she could no longer qualify, played with a freedom she had lacked in previous matches.
The Ukrainian fourth seed saw out the first set and when she recovered an early break in the second, Halep's challenge faded away.
Halep must now wait to see if Pliskova edges her out for the coveted end-of-year number one ranking by taking the title on Sunday.
